After the 1930s, Matisse created an important body of work created as a cut paper collage. The outstanding scale and lush colors of his collage cut-outs are one of the most admired and influential works of Matisse's career. For this specific work, gouache was painted onto white sheets of paper. Matisse then cut out elements of the sheets and placed them into arrangements and mounted on canvas.
